Looked around the forum and still haven't found the answer to your question? Here are a few commonly asked questions and answers around Milan:
What is Milan?
Thoughtfully designed and developed, Milan is a user-driven protocol built on top of IEEE Audio Video Bridging (AVB) open standards with added specification requirements for professional media to ensure that all Milan devices will work together on a network.
Milan is the Pro AV market-defined protocol and toolkit that provides manufacturers a specific set of rules and directives for products to be built to exacting requirements for the network layer and the application layer including media streams, formats, clocking and redundancy, and thus once tested and certified, form a fully interoperable ecosystem for deterministic networking in the Pro AV market.
Where can I find the Milan Specification?
Milan specifications for Format Interoperability, Media Clocking, Redundancy, and Controllers can be found at: avnu.org/specifications/
Where can I find more information on Milan?
A Milan whitepaper and additional information can be found at: www.avnu.org/Milan
What are the benefits of implementing Milan?
Milan removes the guesswork for manufacturers trying to navigate the complicated world of networking technology.
1. Milan clearly defines what features, functionality and requirements to include in AV products to make them work with others on the market: There is no more trial and error.
2. Every device that is Milan certified will connect with any other device using a variety of agreed-upon formats and market-required definitions in the protocol.
3. Members who implement and certify for Milan can be confident in the protection of their investment with this future-proof networking standard that has long-term support.
How is this different from what Avnu certification already promises?
Market leaders decided long ago that AVB/TSN is a technically superior network technology that guarantees deterministic delivery of audio, video and data, and offers a sustainable standard technology that is not limited by one company’s vision and its future development and support decisions for its technology.
Avnu Alliance offers compliance testing and certification of the foundational standard, which is ideal for network infrastructure switches, but doesn’t include specification requirements for media formats, media-clocking, redundancy and other requirements; hence, it does not ensure practical interoperability amongst AV end devices.
Today, major manufacturers in the Pro AV space have taken the lead with the first tangible solution to promise deterministic, reliable and future-proof delivery of networked media. Building on the technical benefits of the enduring open standard AVB, such as time synchronization and guaranteed quality of service as well as risk-free coexistence of control and media data on one network, Milan takes the guesswork out of implementation and interoperability for manufacturers with defined device requirements to enable foolproof interoperability via certification.
Is Milan available in other Avnu markets (i.e. industrial, automotive)?
Milan is designed specifically for the Pro AV industry, by the Pro AV industry. Other vertical markets within Avnu are looking to model industry-specific certification programs after the Pro AV market’s Milan certification.
Does Milan have a roadmap for video?
The Milan solution currently is being implemented for audio and Avnu members are exploring how this will evolve to meet the needs of video in the future.
Do Milan devices work with AVB devices? Does Milan work with Avnu Certified products?
Avnu certification guarantees interoperability at the network layer but not at the application layer.
Milan certification guarantees interoperability with Avnu and Milan certified products at the network layer AND interoperability with Milan products at the application layer.
How does Milan impact current Avnu certified devices?
Milan is fully compatible with Avnu certified switches. Switches are not required to meet Milan certification. However, there are some optimizations that can be added from switch manufacturers. Some switch manufacturers, including Luminex, are already implementing this in their devices.
Existing Avnu certified Pro Audio end devices will need to go through Milan testing to receive Milan certification and ensure Milan interoperability.
Can I use the Milan Logo on my device?
Only products that are Milan certified may bear the Milan certified logo.
Are there any open source resources available through OpenAvnu?
The L-Acoustics open source AVDECC Library will be is a Milan implementation and will be freely available to everyone that wants to build a Milan compliant product: github.com/L-Acoustics/avdecc
An open source controller HIVE software will also be available shortly: github.com/christophe-calmejane/Hive
